Decluttering Tips for Small Homes That You NEED to Know!

Keeping your valuables in and clutter out can be difficult at times, especially in a smaller home. There is usually less space for excess items, which requires some to make regular clean outs. Although, this can be a daunting task. Knowing what to keep and what to ditch is not always clear cut and it is common to be in a position where you do not know exactly where to go next. The tips and tricks below can hopefully be of help to you next time it is time for a clean out and make the decluttering process a little more straightforward.

1. Incorporate storage containers to help categorize items – Using any type of storage bins, boxes, or drawers can be found useful in decluttering a small area. When living in a smaller home, you must maximize space and these tools can help you to do just that. Categorize your items into a system that makes sense to you and store them appropriately with corresponding labels. (And remember, the key to this is to keep the items in their same place after each use!) This system can work great for any room in your home.

2. Learn to distinguish important items from those that are not as important – It can be difficult at times to distinguish what items are truly worth keeping and those that are being kept for no reason. The most straightforward approach to this is to ask yourself: “Have I used this item in a practical sense in the last few months?” If the answer is no, it may be time to part ways with it. If you are having trouble coming to a clear resolution, consulting family or friends may also be helpful.

3. Declutter a little bit each day – The thought of doing a complete declutter all in one day can be intimidating. Instead of saving it all up for an all-day event, instead take 30 minutes or so each day and declutter just one room or a small section of your home that needs it. This method can increase productivity and allow you to feel less overwhelmed.

4. If all else fails, try the 4-Box Method – The 4-Box Method can be a helpful strategy to use when decluttering your home or small space. Never heard of it? Let us enlighten you! The first step is to take 4 boxes and label each differently with Trash, Keep, Re-Locate, and Giveaway. Choose a room in your home and place each item into a box. This process may extend over a few weeks to months, but it is a great way to survey all of your belongings and where they stand in order of importance to you and your family.
