Community Highlight: Park Ridge

For this week’s community highlight, we travel up to the tip top to a community located in Iron Mountain, MI, the community of Park Ridge. While small, the community is surrounded by beautiful pines and tons of natural beauty hard to find anywhere else. Iron Mountain is a perfect destination for anyone who enjoys the real, raw wilderness. During the summer months, kayakers, canoeists, and fisherman galore can enjoy the rushing waters of local rivers to use for their sport. Along with that, loads of festivals and other outdoor activities are held to give residents a chance to build relationships within their community. When the weather turns cold (and it will!) snowmobilers come out to play with over 100 trails running through the area, as well as nearby ski hills located at Pine Mountain Resort. If the great outdoors is not for you, there are dozens of other museums, art galleries, and shopping around the area. The community of Park Ridge itself offers residents a peaceful lifestyle, with wooded sites available across the community. Pets are welcome and an on-site clubhouse allows for interactions with others. Additionally, Park Ridge is very quiet which adds to the wilderness setting. If a peaceful, woodsy lifestyle sounds ideal to you, Park Ridge could be the perfect place for you to live.

A FEW FUN FACTS:

· Iron Mountain was originally discovered and founded as a mining city, due to the prominent Chapin Mine nearby. By 1987, the mine was no longer in use and named a national historical site.

· The city of Iron Mountain is known for its “pasties”. A pasty is a type of pastry that is usually filled with meat or vegetables and then baked. It is a traditional Cornish delicacy.

· The Millie Hill Mine, located in Iron Mountain, is one of the largest sites for bat hibernation in the entire Midwest. Nearly 25,000-50,000 bats can be found residing there!

· The city contains a great deal of natural mineral deposits, including hematite, iron ore and quartz.
