Our community highlight of the week features the community of Oakwood Terrace. This quiet community is located in Portage WI, a small town in Columbia County. Small neighborhoods surround the community, as well as a growing industrial center that provides many opportunities for residents. The city’s proximity to both the Wisconsin River and Fox River give it a beautiful backdrop. History is rich and very present throughout the city as well. Recreational fanatics will enjoy the miles of bike trails that line the city. Pauquette Park and the Pine Island State Wildlife Area are two spots to enjoy nature as well as some exercise by either bike or foot. Portions of the Ice Age Trail also run through the area which offer even more opportunity for natural enjoyment. For those who are a bit more daring, Devil’s Lake State Park is only a short drive away. Interested in learning more about Portage’s rich history? You could consider visiting The Portage Canal, the Zona Gale House, or the local WWI museum. Specialty stores and boutiques are also present for those who are craving a unique shopping experience. The Portage Café is a great choice for an old-fashioned style home-cooked meal. Afterwards, grab a seat at the local seven screen theater and catch the latest movie. The community of Oakwood Terrace itself is a welcoming spot for both young and old alike. Pets are welcome and the wooded atmosphere can be very appealing. If a city with a natural feel and tons of opportunity sounds like the right place for you, Oakwood Terrace could be the place for your new home.
A FEW FUN FACTS:
· The city of Portage was named for the Fox-Wisconsin Waterway. This route was historically used by Marquette and Joliet during their expedition to find an alternate route to the Mississippi in the late 1600s. This waterway became a natural “portage”.
· Portage is filled with historical sites, nearly 30 total are scattered between the boundaries.
· Because of the many marshes and lowlands that lie within the city, the northern side of the city looks much different than the central city because of building differences due to these physical features.
· The city of Portage is also known as “Where the North Begins”.
